HISTORY
Victor and Lila Peters purchased the Moorooduc property on the Mornington Peninsula in the early 1960’s and named it after their first racehorse Fulmen. Fulmen had a successful racing career winning a total of 8 stakes races including the Adelaide and Brisbane Cups in 1967. Fulmen retired to Fulmen Park and spent the remainder of his years there.
Originally Fulmen Park was purchased by Victor and Lila Peters solely to agist their own racehorses. During that time they went on to have many more successful racehorses, the most famous being Taj Rossi who in 1973 won the Cox Plate, Victoria Derby, George Adams (now Emirates Stakes), Sandown Guineas, Ascot Vale Stakes and the Moonee Valley Stakes. Taj Rossi went on to stand at stud at Spendthrift Farm in Kentucky (USA) before returning to Australia to stand at Tarunga Stud in Scone (NSW) under the care of Dr. Phil Redman. Taj Rossi’s Australian progeny went on to win 14 stakes races, including two Group 1 races.
In the early 1980’s Lee Powell took on the position of manager of Fulmen Park. By the early 1990’s Lee had persuaded Victor and Lila Peters to convert Fulmen Park into a commercial thoroughbred agistment establishment. The business grew rapidly as Lee established a reputation for excellence throughout the thoroughbred industry. Fulmen Park has always maintained an outstanding quality of care which is demonstrated by the exceptional condition of horses when they leave.
Over the years Fulmen Park’s range of services has expanded and now includes yearling preparation, broodmare care and agistment, general thoroughbred agistment, rehabilitation and the co-ordination of breaking and pre-training. Fulmen Park is now regarded as one of the best in the horse racing industry.
Victor Peters died in 1997 and the overall management of Fulmen Park was taken over by his daughter and son-in-law, Paula and Bryan Gurry. The Gurry family has also been very involved in racing for many years.
In 2005 Fulmen Park purchased an additional property in Longwood (near Euroa) in North Eastern Victoria. This property was part of the original Vinery Stud Victoria located strategically within the “thoroughbred capital of Victoria”. The expansion to Longwood has provided the opportunity to relocate the majority of the broodmare services closer to the main stallion studs in Victoria, and to provide additional resources to accommodate spellers and yearlings for sales preparation.
